Traditional regional products

Around our mini campsite, in the heart of south-western France, you will find countless small producers who are passionate about making authentic local products. From cheeses from the Pyrenees to wines from the hills around Pau, Béarn is a paradise for lovers of local and artisanal food.

A cuisine shaped by mountains and land

The gastronomy of Béarn is closely linked to the landscape. In the Pyrenees, sheep and cattle graze on vast mountain pastures, while corn, beans and fruit are grown in the lower-lying areas. This combination is reflected in the local cuisine: honest, nutritious and full of character.

One of the region’s best-known products is undoubtedly Ossau-Iraty, a sheep’s cheese with a mild but distinctive flavour. This cheese is still made using traditional methods and can be bought directly from the producer at many local markets.

Foie gras, preserved in charcuterie

Béarn is part of the renowned South-West French culinary tradition. This means that foie gras, confit de canard and artisanal charcuterie play an important role here. Many farmers process their own products and sell them directly from their homes or at the market.

Another special feature is the use of natural salt from Salies-de-Béarn, which has been mined for centuries. This salt gives local hams and sausages their distinctive flavour.

Wines from the hills: Jurançon

The vineyards of Jurançon are located a short distance from our mini campsite. These white wines – both dry and sweet – are known for their fresh acidity and aromatic character. A glass of Jurançon is the perfect accompaniment to sheep’s cheese, foie gras or simply on a sunny terrace after a day of walking.

Many winegrowers welcome visitors for tastings, often in a relaxed and personal atmosphere.

Local markets: the heart of Béarn

If you really want to get to know the region, visit one of the weekly markets. In villages and towns such as Pau, Nay, Navarrenx, Oloron-Sainte-Marie and Salies-de-Béarn, producers sell their own products: cheeses, honey, jams, vegetables, fruit, bread and wine.

A visit to the market is not only practical, but also an experience. It is easy to strike up a conversation, get tips on preparation, and often taste the products on the spot. For many of our guests, this is one of the highlights of their stay.

More than just food

In addition to culinary products, Béarn also has a rich heritage of craftsmanship. Think of the famous Béarnaise beret, handmade wool products and small workshops where old techniques are still used. Fun to discover during a trip to the region – and ideal as an original souvenir.

Tasting during your stay

A stay at our mini campsite is more than just an overnight stay. It is the ideal base from which to discover the flavours of Béarn: from a morning at the market to a wine tasting in the hills or a cheese farm high in the Pyrenees.
